How to compress a video for email, WhatsApp and the web
Most email and chat apps cap attachments at around 25 MB, so a phone clip is often too large to send. The good news: you can usually cut a video to a fraction of its size with almost no visible quality loss. Here is how to do it in vedyt, entirely on your device.
Start by compressing the file
The fastest win is straight compression: re-encoding the video at a more efficient bitrate. This alone often halves the size of a clip recorded on a phone. Drop your file in, let it process locally, and download — nothing is ever uploaded to a server.
Lower the resolution if it is still too big
A 4K or 1080p clip carries far more data than most screens need. Dropping to 720p (or 480p for quick previews) shrinks the file dramatically while still looking crisp on phones and in chat windows.
Trim the parts you do not need
File size scales with length. Cutting the dead seconds at the start and end — or keeping only the clip that matters — is one of the easiest ways to get under an attachment limit.
Convert oddly-formatted videos to MP4
MOV, MKV, AVI and WebM files are not always accepted by chat apps and can be larger than they need to be. Converting to MP4 (H.264) makes the file smaller and playable almost everywhere.
