How to resize, compress and convert images for the web
Oversized images are the most common cause of slow pages. A photo straight from a phone can be several megabytes — far more than a web page needs. A few quick steps make images load fast and look sharp.
Resize to the dimensions you actually use
A 4000-pixel-wide photo displayed in a 1000-pixel column wastes bandwidth. Resize to the real display size first — it is the single biggest saving you can make.
Compress to cut the file size
After resizing, compression squeezes out the remaining bytes. For photos, a JPG at around 70–80% quality is usually indistinguishable from the original at a fraction of the size.
Convert to a modern format
WebP typically beats JPG and PNG on size at the same quality. Converting your images is an easy win for page speed — and you can switch back just as easily.
Fit non-square photos for social feeds
For a tidy grid or a post that is not cropped awkwardly, fit the whole photo onto a square or social-sized canvas with a clean background.
